China Coal Production

China: Coal Output Rises 10.6%, Met Coke Production Falls 1.4% in Jun’17 Y-o-Y

Driven by higher consumption during the summer season, coal output in China rose 10.6% in Jun’17 over that in Jun’16, data released by the National Statistics Bureau of that country shows.

In Jun’16, 308 MnT of coal was produced in that country, according to the released data.

The higher production was due to the miners ramping up production to meet the peak demand during the hot days. The relevant authorities had directed the coal miners there to boost production in order to ensure uninterrupted coal supply to keep electricity generation intact, without failure.

In the homes, people in that country had to keep their air conditioners in the running mode as a prolonged heat wave hit the country.

Moreover, hydro-power generation there was also affected by the heavy rainfall, boosting demand for thermal power.

As a consequence of the stronger demand, prices of Thermal Coal in China rose to around Yuan 615/MT of late.

Given the demand scenario, coal production in that country in July’17 is also expected to be on the higher side.

On the other hand, Met Coke production had dipped by 1.4% to 38.16 MnT in Jun’17 on year-on-year basis.
