Coking Coal Imports in India Rise in Jun’17 M-o-M on Active Demand

Coking Coal imports have risen in India due to the active consumption by the steel makers. In Jun’17, imports of the coal rose marginally by 1.94% over the imports in May’17, an analysis by CoalMint Research shows.

Import data compiled by CoalMint Research shows that around 4.20 MnT of Coking Coal was imported in India in Jun’17; and that was slightly more than the imports of 4.12 MnT in the previous month.

On a year-on-year comparison, the imports during the month were lower by 3.45 MnT than the imports of 4.12 MnT in Jun’16, reveals the available data in the CoalMint database.

Strong demand emanating from the active steel making in India has resulted in the imports remaining at highs. As the country is deficit in the domestic production of the coal, imports are relied upon to cater to the demand.

Another emerging fact in the country is the growing tendency to diversify the import regions due to the occasional supply disruptions that occur in Australia. In this context, USA is gradually coming into the spotlight among the coal buyers in the country. A break-up of the Coking Coal imports from all the countries during Jun’17 shows that the imports from USA were up significantly.

During Jun’17, the Paradip port had handled the highest volume of import traffic; followed by the Dhamra and Haldia ports.

In the succeeding month, Coking Coal imports are expected to remain at highs, as indicated by the consumption pattern in the country.

The major importers during the month were: Rawmet Commodities, Jindal Steel and Power, Visa Suncoke, JSW, SAIL, Gerdau Steel, Tata Steel, Bhushan Steel, RINL and Electrosteel.
