Japan: Ferrous Scrap Exports Decline 11 % M-o-M in May’17

Japan – 3rd largest exporter of ferrous scrap in the world has witnessed a drop in its exports in May’17.The country has exported 0.57 MnT ferrous scrap in May’17, registering fall of 11% M-o-M as it had exported 0.64 MnT in Apr’17.

Japan ferrous scrap exports are down by 36 % Y-o-Y in May’17 against 0.89 MnT in May’16.

Drop of 16 % has noted in its exports during the period of Jan- May’17 with 3.26 MnT of exports against 3.86 MnT in the same time period of CY16.

South Korea accounted for 53% share in Japan May’17 scrap exports  – Japan primarily exports its ferrous scrap to East Asian countries. Though, the quantity unloaded in the South Korea of Japanese exports has registered a slight fall, South Korea continued to be the topmost shareholder with 0.30 MnT of scrap imports from Japan in May’17.

China remained the 2nd largest importer of Japanese scrap in May’17 which has lifted 0.13 MnT ferrous scrap from Japan in May’17, stable against Apr’17.

However, Vietnam has shown 37.5% M-o-M growth, and imported 0.11 MnT ferrous scrap during considered month. Taiwan imported 0.02 MnT ferrous scrap from Japan in May’17.

South Korea and Vietnam, the prime importers of Japanese Scrap are shifting towards the Chinese scrap and have recently imported scrap from China. Thus, Japan will aim at the full local consumption of scrap instead exporting to Asian regions.
