Japan, the second-largest coal importer in the world; have witnessed growth in monthly coal imports. The country has imported 15.01 MnT coal in May’17, with an increase of 5% M-o-M compared with 14.24 MnT in Apr’17.
However, on the yearly basis, Coal imports in May’17 were 7% lower than the levels seen during the same month in 2016.
During Jan’17-May’17, total coal imported by Japan stood 79.66 MnT. Total coal imports has marginally fallen by 1% compared with 80.57 MnT imported during Jan’16-May’16.

Grade-wise Coal Imports:
Japan majorly imports Non-Coking coal and Coking coal, along with small quantities of Anthracite, Met Coke and Pet coke.
During May’17, import of Met coke has fallen 46% M-o-M to 0.07 MnT. While imports of all other remaining coal grades have increased during the month.

Major Coal Exporters:
Australia was the top coal exporter to Japan during the month, followed by Indonesia, Russia, Canada and USA.
Coal export from Australia stood 8.42 MnT in May’17. Exports slightly rose on the monthly basis compared with 8.37 MnT in Apr’17. While, on the yearly basis, exports decreased 15% compared with 9.88 MnT in May’16.
Indonesia, the second-largest coal exporter, supplied 2.42 MnT coal during the month. The country has recorded increase in coal exports both in the monthly and yearly basis.
Russia was the third-largest coal exporter in May’17. Coal exports from Russia increased 7% M-o-M to 1.44 MnT during the month.
