South Africa: Ferrous Scrap Exports Up 33% M-o-M in May’17

South Africa- a major exporter of ferrous scrap has witnessed a rise in its exports in May’17. South Africa exported 0.04 MnT ferrous scrap registering hike of 33% M-o-M in May’17, as it was 0.03 MnT in Apr’17.

However, in yearly premises the exports remained unaltered in May’17 as exports were 0.04 MnT in May ’16 too.

In first five months of CY17, ferrous scrap exports from South Africa amounted to 0.21 MnT, up 10.52 % against 0.22 MnT of ferrous scrap exports during the same period of CY16.

Majority of the scrap exports made from South Africa are done from ports – Durban, Capetown, Pretoria and Johannesburg.

Pakistan continues to remain largest recipient of South African ferrous scrap – 
Pakistan imported 0.02 MnT ferrous scrap from South Africa in May’17, unchanged compared with exports in Apr’17. Pakistan scrap imports are expected to rise further amid expanding steel production capacities in Pakistan in the coming months.

India’s imports of South African ferrous scrap has increased to 0.02 MnT in May’17 against 0.01 MnT in Apr’17.Other major destination for South Africa ferrous exports was South Korea which imported 0.01 MnT scrap.

South Africa’s scrap exports to Bangladesh and Vietnam remained nil in May’17.
