Turkey’s coal imports were recorded at 3.25 MnT in May’17, posting increase both in the monthly and yearly basis.
Import volume in the country increased 40% M-o-M during May’17 compared with 2.33 MnT in Apr’17, also coal imports were up by 21% from levels seen during the same month in 2016, according to the data provided by Turkish customs.
During the first 5 months of 2017, Turkey has imported 15.99 MnT coal, which is marginally higher than 15.81 MnT imported by the country during Jan’16-May’16.
Grade-wise Coal Imports:
Turkey has majorly imported Non-coking coal in May’17, followed by Coking coal, Pet coke, and small quantity of Anthracite and Met coke.
Non-coking coal imports increase 72% M-o-M to 2.31 MnT in May’17. Moreover, Non-coking coal had accounted for more than 70% of the total coal import during the month.
While, coking coal imports fell 43% M-o-M to 0.41 MnT during the month against 0.72 MnT in Apr’17.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Exporters:
Colombia remained major coal exporter to Turkey in May’17. The country had supplied 1.43 MnT during the month, with an increase of 99% M-o-M compared with 0.72 MnT in Apr’17.
Exports have also rose 120% Y-o-Y compared with 0.65 MnT in May’16.
Russia was the second-largest coal exporter in May’17. Exports from Russia were recorded at 1.07 MnT in May’17, increasing 51% M-o-M and 75% Y-o-Y.
USA, the third -largest coal exporter to Turkey, witnessed a fall in monthly coal exports. Exports fell 20% M-o-M to 0.36 MnT in May’17. Also, exports decreased by 16% Y-o-Y during the month.
