CIL: Monthly Coal Production and Offtake Declines in Jun’17

India’s largest coal producer, Coal India Ltd (CIL) has witnessed fall in their monthly coal production in Jun’17. Coal production has marginally fallen from 40.74 MnT in May’17 to 39.66 MnT in Jun’17.

Coal production also fell 7% Y-o-Y compared with 42.72 MnT in Jun’16.

Government of India has reduced CIL’s coal production target for FY18 from 660 MnT to 600 MnT due to tepid demand for the fuel from thermal power plants.

During Apr’17-Jun’17, CIL total coal production stood 118.84 MnT against set target of 130.37 MnT. Moreover, production has decreased 5% Y-o-Y compared with 125.4 MnT produced during Apr’16-Jun’16.

Coal Off take:
Coal offtake has fallen by 1.6% M-o-M to 45.67 MnT in Jun’17. However, on the yearly basis, coal dispatch has increased by 2% compared with 44.96 MnT in Jun’16.

During, Apr’17-May’17, total coal offtake has increased by 3.1% to 137.36 MnT compared with 132.93 MnT during Apr’16-Jun’16, indicating CIL’s attempt to cut down inventories as the company looks to clear stockpiles.

Performance of Subsidiaries:
Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) has overtaken South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL) to become the top coal producer during the month. MCL’s coal output was 10.70 MnT  while SECL managed to produce 10.68 MnT in Jun’17.

Among the 8 CIL’s subsidiaries, only Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL) has managed to achieve its monthly production target. The company has produced 3.29 MnT coal against set target of 2 MnT for Jun’17. While monthly production of all the subsidiaries has fallen during the month.

In terms of Coal Offtake, SECL remains the top company among the CIL’s subsidiaries. SECL along with NCL (Northern Coalfields Ltd) and NEC (North Eastern Coalfields), managed to achieve their monthly offtake target.
