Bangladesh: Coal Imports Down 35% Y-o-Y in FY17

Bangladesh coal imports have fallen 35% Y-o-Y to 2,01,620 MT in FY17 compared with 3,081,400 MT in FY16, according to the provision data maintained by CoalMint Research. (The Bangladesh Fiscal year runs from 1st July to 30th June)

The country had not imported any coal during Jun’17, likewise in the previous year where the country had not imported coal during Jun’16. Bangladesh had imported mere quantity of 6900 MT in the month of May’17.

Bangladesh follows a certain trend in their coal imports, the country imports majority of coal during Aug-Mar after that their coal imports starts to decline. In FY17, the country had acquired highest quantity of 462,700 MT during Feb’17, thereafter coal imports started to fall.

Bangladesh has reduced their coal imports during the current fiscal. The reason behind falling imports could be attributed to the brick manufacturers, the chief consumers of imported coal, which have lowered their purchase this year.

Moreover, Power sector in Bangladesh which is still developing, has not picked demand for imported coal. Power sectors’ coal requirements are catered by domestic coal supplied by Barapukuria Coal Mining Company, which had produced 1,021,638 MT during FY16. (The company has not provided any record of coal production for FY17).

Major Exporting Countries:
Indonesia remained the major coal exporter to Bangladesh in this fiscal, however exports have fell by 48% Y-o-Y to 1,263,520 MT in FY17.

South Africa, Mozambique, Australia, India, and Malaysia were the remaining coal supplier to Bangladesh during the year.
