China: Coal Production Rises on Strong Summer Demand

Buoyed by increasing consumption during the summer season, coal miners in China have raised their output.

In May’17, coal production in China was at 297.8 MnT, according to the National Bureau of Statistics of China, and that was slightly above the production of 295 MnT in Apr’17.
On a year-on-year comparison, the production in May’17 rose by around 12% from that in the same month of the last year.

As a consequence of the higher demand, Thermal Coal prices in that country have risen more than 16%, reaching record highs, of around Yuan 570/MT.

Of late, coal inventory at the Qinhuangdao port, the largest coal transportation hub in China, has fallen to 5.3 MnT by 12Jun’17, from 6 MnT in the beginning of the month.

During the Jan-May’17 period, coal production in China rose 4.3% to 1.4 BnT as compared to the corresponding period of the preceding year.
