Russia Coal Exports Down 51% M-o-M in Apr’17

Russia is the third-largest coal exporter in the world, behind Australia and Indonesia. The country has witnessed a decline of 51% in their monthly coal exports, according to the customs data.

Russian coal exports have dropped from 20.21 MnT in Mar’17 to 9.84 MnT in Apr’17. On the yearly basis, export volume has remained almost same compared with 9.81 MnT in Apr’16.

During the first 4 months of 2017(Jan’17-Apr’17), Russia has exported 52.7 MnT coal with an increase of 5% Y-o-Y, compared with 50.21 MnT exported during Jan’16-Apr’16.

Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Russia mainly exports Non-coking coal which accounts for more than 75% of the total monthly coal exports. However, Exports of Non-coking coal fell by 50% M-o-M to 7.73 MnT in Apr’17.

While exports of major coal commodities have fallen during the month, exports of Pet Coke increased by 33% M-o-M to 0.16 MnT in Apr’17 compared with 0.12 MnT in Mar’17.

Major Coal Importing Countries:
China has overtaken South Korea to become the top coal importer from Russia in Apr’17.

China received 1.35 MnT coal in Apr’17; monthly imports were down by 41% compared with 2.30 MnT in Mar’17. However, on the yearly basis, coal imports have increased by 59% compared with 0.85 MnT in Apr’16.

South Korea, the second-largest coal importer, received 1.28 MnT during the month. Coal imports were down by 56% M-o-M compared with 2.92 MnT in Mar’17. On the yearly basis, coal imports recorded an increase of 35% compared with 0.95 MnT in Apr’16.

Japan, third-largest coal importer, also recorded a decline in monthly coal imports. Japan imported 1.09 MnT coal in Apr’17 against 1.67 MnT in Mar’17. On the other hand, Japanese Coal imports rose by 5% Y-o-Y compared with 1.04 MnT in Apr’16.
