Canada witnessed a decline of 11% in their monthly coal exports. The country exported 3.13 MnT coal in Apr’17 against 3.52 MnT in Mar’17, according to the custom data.
Coal exports in Apr’17 increased by 19% Y-o-Y compared with 2.64 MnT in Apr’16.
Coal Exports in 2017:
Canadian coal export volume remains almost unchanged in 2017. The country’s exports during Jan ’17-Apr’17 stood 10.83 MnT against 10.76 MnT exported during Jan’16-Apr’16, indicating a slight increase of 1% over the year.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Canada exported Bituminous coal and Pet Coke during the month. However, exports of both these grades have fallen on the monthly basis.
Export of Bituminous coal fell 12% M-o-M to 2.71 MnT in Apr’17, while pet coke exports fell by 7% M-o-M to 0.42 MnT.

Major Coal Importing Countries:
Japan overtook China to become the top coal importer in Apr’17, as coal import from China fell 61% M-o-M to 0.34 MnT.
Japan received 0.71 MnT in Apr’17; the country recorded a decline of 12% in their monthly imports from Canada. However, imports increased by 20% Y-o-Y compared with 0.59 MnT in Apr’16.
South Korea, the second-largest coal importer, received 0.54 MnT coal during the month. Coal imports were down by 4% both on the monthly and yearly basis.
United States were the third-largest importer of Canadian coal. Coal import increased by 21% M-o-M to 0.41 MnT in Apr’17. Imports also increased by 64% Y-o-Y compared with 0.25 MnT in Apr’16.
