South Africa, world’s 3rd largest iron ore exporter after Australia and Brazil has exported 5.15 MnT iron ore in Apr’17, according to the trade data released by South African Customs. Iron ore exports have decreased by 12% M-o-M as it was 5.83 MnT in Mar’17.
On the other hand, South African iron ore exports have increased by 11% for the month Apr Y-o-Y compared with Apr’16. In Apr’16 iron ore exports from South Africa was recorded at 4.65 MnT.
South Africa exported 20.9 MnT iron ore during Jan-Apr’17 against 20.5 MnT in the same period last year.
In Apr’17, the agglomerated iron ore exports were at 3.16 MnT, down 6% as it were 3.36 MnT in Mar’17. On the other hand, non-agglomerated iron ore exports were registered at 1.98 MnT in Apr’17 compared to 2.46 MnT in Mar’17.
Africa iron ore export to China falls 26% in Apr’17
The largest importer of South African iron ore China retains the first position for the month of Apr’17 as well. For the month China imported 2.97 MnT iron ore from South Africa compared to the quantity of 4 MnT in Mar’17
Hong Kong has been the second largest importer of South African iron ore after China at 0.49 MnT. There was a increase of 20% in imports from South Africa M-o-M.
Other major countries that South Africa exported iron ore to in Apr’17 were South Korea, Japan and India.
Iron ore exports from Saldanha Bay down 17% M-o-M
4.18 MnT iron ore was exported from South Africa’s Saldanha Bay in Apr’17 compared to 5.01 MnT in Mar’17. Other major ports were Komatipoort and Richards Bay.
