South Africa coal exports decreased by 5% M-o-M to 6.33 MnT in Apr’17 compared with 6.64 MnT in Mar’17. Coal exports have also fallen by 0.78% Y-o-Y compared with 6.38 MnT in Apr’16.
The country has so far exported 25.85 MnT coal during Jan’17-Apr’17 which is 7% higher than that exported during the corresponding period of the previous year, as per the data provided by South African customs.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
South Africa has mainly exported Bituminous coal, which accounts for more than 95% of the total coal exports. However, exports of bituminous coal have fallen by 2% M-o-M to 6.19 MnT in Apr’17.
Export of Anthracite coal has also decreased by 8%M-o-M to 0.10 MnT in Apr’17.
Small quantities of Coke and semi-coke and other grades of coal comprise the remaining coal commodities exported by the country during Apr’17.

Quantities in MnT
Major Coal Importers:
India is the major coal importer of South African coal. In Apr’17, the country imported 3.51 MnT coal, up by 9% M-o-M compared with 3.21 MnT in Mar’17.
However, Import volume in Apr’17 was much lower than the coal imported during Apr’16.India’s coal import has fallen 21% Y-o-Y compared with 4.47 MnT in Apr’16.
Moreover, total coal imported by India during Jan’17-Apr’17 stood 10.9 MnT down by 23% compared with 14.19 MnT imported during the same period of previous year, showing a reduction in coal imports from the country over the year.
Pakistan, second-largest coal importer in Apr’17 acquired 0.98 MnT. Coal imports have fallen on the monthly basis by 16% compared with 1.17 MnT in Mar’17.
On the other hand, exports have increased three-fold on the yearly basis compared with 0.33 MnT in Apr’16.
Taiwan was the third-largest coal importer. The country received 0.30 MnT coal during Apr’17.
