The much awaited commercial coal mining in India is expected to be actuated soon.
The Government of India has scheduled an inter- ministerial meeting tomorrow (25May’17) to discuss the modalities for the proposed commercial coal mining in the country.
The meeting will be headed by Susheel Kumar, the Coal Secretary, and will be attended by senior officials of the Power, Coal, Steel Ministries, among others.
The government is likely to finalize the guidelines for commercial coal mining in the country in the meeting. Consultations with the stakeholders in the implied context were already done.
Commercial coal mining refers to opening up of coal mines to the private players, who will be free to decide their operation as well as pricing matters independently. They will be able to sale their produce to any sector, without any restrictions.
In essence, the move is a part of the ambitious coal production plan in India—of attaining 1.5 BnT of coal production by 2020. Out of the total target, 500 MnT is expected to be produced by the private players.
