India: Performance of Major Coal Producers in Apr’17

Ministry of Coal released the monthly performance of the major coal miners in India which are summarised below:

Performance of Coal India Ltd (CIL):
CIL is the India’s major coal mining company which contributes around 80% of the country’s total coal production.

Coal Production:
CIL failed to achieve its monthly production target for Apr’17, as it produced 38.4 MnT coal against the set target of 43.6 MnT in Apr’17.

Monthly coal production fell by 42% M-o-M compared with 66.1 MnT produced during Mar’17.Coal production was also down by 4% Y-o-Y compared with 40.09 MnT in Apr’16.

Coal Dispatch:
Overall coal dispatch was recorded at 45.3 MnT in Apr’17, down by 13% M-o-M. However, dispatch increased 6% Y-o-Y compared with 42.7 MnT in Apr’16.

Dispatch to power sector rose by 8% Y-o-Y to 33.2 MnT in Apr’17 but fell by 4% M-o-M compared with 34.6 MnT in Mar’17.

Coal E-Auctions:
CIL allocated 4.1MnT coal in the spot auction held in Apr’17, thus recording an increase of 42% over the notified price.

However, quantity allotted in spot auction was down by 26% M-o-M compared with 5.52 MnT allocated during Mar’17 and by 54% Y-o-Y compared with 8.96 MnT allocated during Apr’16.

CIL had also conducted special forward e-auction for the power sector in Apr’17. The company allocated 9.61 MnT coal during these auctions with an increase of 10.5% over the notified price.

Special E-auction showed better performance on the monthly basis. The total allocated coal quantity in Apr’17 increased by 78% compared with 5.40 MnT in Mar’17.

Quantity in MnT

Performance of SCCL:
Singreni Collieries Coalfields Ltd (SCCL) is a Government coal mining company jointly owned by the Government of Telangana and Government of India on a 51:49 equity basis.

Coal Production:
SCCL, likewise CIL, failed to achieve its monthly coal production target of 5.1 MnT. The company produced 4.5 MnT in Apr’17, thus achieving only 88% of the set target.

Monthly production recorded significant downfall of 37% M-o-M compared with 7.18 MnT in Mar’17. On the other hand, production in Apr’17 slightly increased over the year compared with 4.45 MnT in Apr’16.

Coal Dispatch:
SCCL Overall coal dispatch in spite of falling on the monthly basis, increased 17% over the year to 5.4 MnT in Apr’17 compared with 4.6 MnT during Apr’16.

Dispatch to power sector also followed the similar trend. Dispatch increased 15% Y-o-Y to 4.5 MnT in Apr’17, while fell by 16% M-o-M compared with 5.4 MnT in Mar’17.

Quantity in MnT

Performance of NLC:
Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Limited (NLCIL) is a Government of India Enterprise engaged in mining of lignite and generation of power through lignite based thermal power plants

Lignite Production:
NLC had set a production target of 3.90 Lakh Tonne(LT), however, the company managed to produce 3.86 LT during Apr’17.

Monthly production fell by 89% M-o-M compared with 36.85 LT in Mar’17. The production also fell 4% Y-o-Y compared with 4.03 LT in Apr’16.

Moreover, NLC removed 175.74 Lakh Cubic Metre (LM3) of overburden for the extraction of coal during Apr’17, which was 14% lower than that removed during Mar’17.

Power Generation:
NLC Ltd has five pithead thermal power plants with an aggregate capacity of 3240 MW. Also, the company has set up a joint venture with TANGEDCO(Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Company) for implementation of coal-based 1000 MW(2X 500 MW) thermal plant at Tuticorin.

Gross Power Generation of NLC Power plants stood 2005.62 MU (Million Unit) in Apr’17. Power generation rose 10% Y-o-Y and 2% M-o-M.
