Pakistan monthly coal imports have surged by 46% M-o-M in the month of March. The country has imported 0.83 MnT in Mar’17 against 0.57 MnT in Feb’17, according to the data collected by CoalMint Research and Pakistan port website.
Coal Demand in Pakistan:
Coal imports, despite high global prices, are expected to surge in the coming years, as demand from cement and energy firms under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor projects would spur buying.
Moreover, the country faces serious power shortages, especially in summer when Pakistan faces a shortfall of more than 6,000 MW. Thus, coal can be seen as the only resource that can overcome the country’s power crisis.
Major Exporting Countries:
Pakistan majorly imports Non-coking coal for operating power stations. South Africa, Indonesia and Russia fulfil the coal needs of Pakistan, with South Africa supplying the majority of the coal.
South Africa has exported 3.45 MnT to Pakistan during Aug’16-Mar’17, Indonesia has supplied 1.04 MnT and Russia has supplied 0.12 MnT during the same period.
During Mar’17, Pakistan received 0.71 MnT from South Africa. Exports from South Africa rose by 38% M-o-M compared with 0.51 MnT in Feb’17.
Indonesia, second largest coal exporter, supplied 0.052 MnT in Mar’17 against 0.056 MnT in Feb’17, thus recording a decline by 7% M-o-M.
