Department of Steel and Mines, Government of Odisha has recently issued a notification regarding extension in the deadline for installation of Vehicle Tracking Units in all the vehicles registered under i3MS to carry minerals/ores.
As per the notification issued 31 Mar’17 was the last deadline for installation of Vehicle Tracking Unit (VTU) in mineral transporting vehicles in the state. VTU’s could be fitted in only 2700 trucks till 31 Mar’17 and many vehicles are in the process of fitting these units.
As disruption in the transportation of minerals is likely to affect the mineral based industries and mining revenue collection adversely and some relaxation may be allowed for the vehicles which have made firm arrangements for fitting of VTU’s.
Steps may be taken accordingly for allowing continuance of issuance of transportation by such vehicles appropriately through i3MS till 30 Apr’17.
Global Positioning System (GPS) based tracking of mineral carrying vehicles on compulsory basis with an objective to check illegal transportation and storage of mineral. VTU is an industrial and automotive grade product integrated with GPS and General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). It has features like – location on demand, SMS facility and storage of past positional log.
