Indonesia Coal Exports Down 6% Y-o-Y in CY16

Indonesian coal exports were recorded at 312.59 MnT in CY16, down by 6% Y-o-Y compared with 331.95 MnT in CY15, as per BPS Indonesia statistics.

Indonesia is the second- largest coal exporter in the world, however, exports from the country have been declining since 2013. In the last three years, coal exports have decreased by 19% from 385.19 MnT in CY13.

Fall in demand from its major coal importer; India, could be attributed to the declining exports.

India has been the chief consumer of Indonesian coal for operating its power stations, but with increase in domestic coal production and push for renewable energy, coal demand in the country has dropped.

Quantities in MnT

Grade-wise Exports:
Indonesia majorly exports other coal (whether or not pulverised but not agglomerated), followed by Coking coal, Non-Coking coal and small quantities of Pet coke.

Indonesia exported 181.95 MnT other coal, down by 5% Y-o-Y compared with 191.61 MnT in CY15.

Non-Coking coal exports recorded at 45.91 MnT were also down by 18% Y-o-Y. While exports of Coking coal rose by 3% Y-o-Y to 83.08 MnT in CY16.

Quantities in MnT

Major Importing Countries:
India remained the top coal importer from Indonesia in CY16, the country acquired about one-third of the total coal. China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Malaysia were among the other major importing nations in CY16.

Imports from India which has been decreasing since the last two years; reached 94.81 MnT in CY16 down by 24% Y-o-Y compared with 124.06 MnT in CY15.

China, the second-largest importer, received 50.87 MnT coal in CY16 up by 38% Y-o-Y against 36.84 MnT in CY15.

Japan, the third-largest importer, also recorded growth in their yearly exports by 6% to 34.97 MnT in CY16.
