Taiwan the fifth largest coal importer in the world saw their coal exports decline on yearly basis.
Taiwan imported 65.83 MnT coal in CY16 down by 2% Y-o-Y in comparison with 67.18 MnT in CY 15.
Coal imports declined as shipments from Indonesia and Russia have dropped, according to data released by Taiwan Customs.
Coal imports also decreased on monthly basis in Dec’16 by 6% to 5.01 MnT against 5.31 MnT in Nov’16.
Grade-wise Coal Imports:
Taiwan majorly imports Bituminous coal, which caters more than 95% of the total coal imports of the country. However, Bituminous coal import has marginally fallen by 0.43% to 63.97 MnT in CY16.
Other coal commodities imported by Taiwan include small quantities of Anthracite, Coke, Pet coke and other grades. It may be noted that imports of all grades have fell during the year, while that of coke have slightly increased by 7% Y-o-Y.

Quantities in MnT
Major Exporting Countries:
Australia remained the top coal exporting country in CY16, which solely carters about half of the Taiwan’s total coal imports.
Australia along with Indonesia and Russia supply account for more than 90% of the total coal exports to Taiwan.
Australia shipped 34.07 MnT coal in CY16, up by 10% Y-o-Y compared with 31.09 MnT in CY15.
However, Exports from Indonesia and Russia have fallen on yearly basis. Shipments from Indonesia were 18% lower at 20.36 MnT in CY16, while Russia supplied 7.06 MnT coal to Taiwan down by 5% Y-o-Y.
