Indian coal imports have increased by 6% to 14.97 MnT in Feb’17. However, In Jan’17 Coal imports were also very low, recorded at 14.19 MnT. Although monthly imports have increased, yet imports in Feb’17 were low in comparison with 17.44 MnT in Feb’16.
With CIL aggressively market its coal to the power sector and Indian Government plans to increase domestic coal production, coal imports have been falling since Oct’16.
During Apr’16-Feb’17, India imported 195.92 MnT coal, down by 7% compared with 210.56 MnT during the corresponding period of previous year.
Grade-wise Coal Imports:
India majorly imports Non-coking coal from different countries followed by Coking coal, Pet coke, Met coke and Anthracite.
During Feb’17, Non-Coking coal imports stood at 9.94 MnT up by 8% compared with 9.14 MnT in Jan’17. Coking coal imports decline by 5% to 3.80 MnT while Pet coke increased by 58% to 1.09 MnT.

Quantities in MnT
Major Exporting Countries:
Indonesia remained the top exporting country in Feb’17; exports have increased by 13% M-o-M to 7.58 MnT.
Australia second-largest coal exporters supplied 3.49 MnT coal to India, however exports have decreased 5% M-o-M compared to 3.69 MnT in Jan’17.
USA has overtaken South Africa as the third largest coal exporters to India by shipping 1.33 MnT in Feb’17. Exports from USA have significantly increased by 105% M-o-M and 108% Y-o-Y. While that from South Africa have fell by 69% Y-o-Y to 1.26 MnT in Feb’17.

Port-wise Imports:
Mundra port received major coal shipments in Feb’17, followed by Kandla, Paradip, Mormugao and Dhamra.
Coal shipments arriving in Mundra port have increased by 30% M-o-M to 2.52 MnT, with about 2.42 MnT arriving from Indonesia while rest of the quantity from USA.

Major Importers in Feb’17:
Adani Power emerged as the largest coal importer in Feb’17, acquiring 1.85 MnT Non-Coking coal from Indonesia.
JSW Steel second-largest receivers procured 1.33 MnT coal comprising of 0.98 MnT Coking coal, 0.21 MnT Non coking coal, and remaining quantity consisting of pet coke and met coke.
SAIL received largest share of coking coal imports of 1.05 MnT with imports coming from Australia, USA and Canada.
