South Africa: Iron Ore Export Dips 17% in Jan’17

South Africa, world’s 3rd largest iron ore exporter have exported 5.13 MnT iron ore in Jan’17, according to the trade data released by South African Customs. Iron ore exports have decreased by 17% M-o-M as it was 6.41 MnT in Dec’16.

On the other hand, South African iron ore exports have increased by 5% on for the month Jan Y-o-Y compared with Jan’16. In Jan’16 iron ore exports from South Africa was recorded at 5.07 MnT.

In Jan’17, the agglomerated iron ore exports were at 2.9 MnT, down 46% as it was 4.49 MnT in Dec’16. On similar lines, non-agglomerated iron ore exports were registered at 2.41 MnT in Jan’17, up by 26% as it was 1.92 MnT in Dec’16.South Africa, Iron Ore, Export South Africa iron ore export to China higher 10% in Jan’17
The largest importer of South African iron ore China retains the first position for the month of Jan’17 as well. For the month China imported 3.31 MnT iron ore from South Africa compared to the quantity of 3.01 MnT in Dec’16

South African share material out of total iron ore imports remains similar at 44% against 45%
South African ore has remained 2nd largest source of iron ore import to India after Brazil in FY17. In this fiscal, the importers of South African iron ore includes – Gujarat based steel plants, Essar Steel, Jindal SAW; few southern India based steel makers and Goa Sponge & Power.

However in the prior two fiscals (i.e. FY15 & FY16) South African iron ore accounted for largest share in India’s iron ore imports.South Africa Country-wise Iron Ore Export Jan-16-17
