China : Coal Consumption Down 4.7% in 2016

Coal consumption in China had fallen 4.7% in 2016 against the consumption 2015, according to the National Bureau of Statistics of China. The reduction in coal consumption was a consequence of the efforts of the Chinese government to lower usage of coal to curb the alarming levels of pollution.

According to the bureau, the share of coal in the energy mix had gone down to 62% in 2016 from 64% in 2015.

However, the drop in coal consumption does not mean any reduction of energy consumption, which had actually risen 1.4% in 2016 on year-on-year basis. Usage of renewable sources played a significant role in fueling energy generation during the year.
