Canada coal exports have increased by 2% in CY16. However, Monthly exports have declined by 8% in Dec’16.
Canada, among the top ten coal exporters in the world, has exported 33.91 MnT coal in CY16. Coal exports have increased by 2% compared with 33.14 MnT in CY15.However; monthly exports have decreased to 2.94 MnT in Dec’16 compared with 3.18 MnT in Nov’16. As per Canadian customs data.
Grade-wise Coal Exports in 2016:
Out of the total coal exported in CY16, the country has supplied more than 80% Bituminous coal to different destinations and rest quantity comprises Pet coke and Coke.
Canada shipped around 30.44 Mnt Bituminous coal, 3.41 MnT Pet coke and 0.06 MnT other grades of coal in CY16.
Exports of bituminous coal and Pet coke have improved yearly. While Coke exports have reduced half to 0.04 MnT over the year.

Coal Exports in 2016:
Canada’s coal production has remained consistent over the years, largely through coal exports which are contributing to the coal industry. A decrease in demand from countries such as China has halted coal production in many mines.
Canada, however, aims to phase out coal-fired plants by 2030 in order to reduce carbon emissions. Thus, will export most of its coal, and hence, as a result, coal exports are likely to move up in the future.
Major Importing countries in 2016:
Japan is the major coal importer from Canada followed by South Korea, China, USA, and India. Japan, Korea and China together procure more than 50% of the total coal exported by Canada.
Japan imported 8.29 MnT coal in CY16 down by 4% compared with 8.61 MnT in CY15.
Korea, second largest coal importer received 5.91 MnT in CY16 against 5.81 MnT in 2015.
Coal exports to India have significantly increased by 67% to 3.02 MnT in CY16.
