- Capesize index jumps 8% d-o-d, continuing rally for 3rd straight session
- Panamax rates decline 2%, while Supramax increases marginally
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) rose by 87 points, or 3.36%, d-o-d to 2,680 on 21 October from 2,593 on 20 October, extending its gains for a third consecutive session and reaching its highest level since 13 October. The increase was primarily driven by a sharp rally in Capesize rates, indicating stronger freight sentiment in the larger vessel segment, potentially supported by improved iron ore and coal shipping activity or tighter vessel availability.
Segment-wise performance
- Capesize index extends rally: The Baltic Capesize Index (BCI) surged by 271 points, or 7.69%, d-o-d to 3,793 on 21 October from 3,522 a day earlier, marking its third consecutive session of gains. The strong advance provided the main support to the overall index, potentially reflecting firmer iron ore freight demand and tightening vessel availability on key routes.
- Panamax index declines further: The Baltic Panamax Index (BPI) fell by 43 points, or 1.91%, d-o-d to 2,204 from 2,247, extending its weakness. The decline suggests continued pressure in the Panamax segment, potentially due to subdued coal and grain cargo enquiries or sufficient vessel supply relative to demand.
- Supramax index edges higher: The Baltic Supramax Index (BSI) rose marginally by 2 points, or 0.11%, d-o-d to 1,870 from 1,868, indicating largely stable market conditions. The marginal increase suggests a broadly balanced market, with no significant shift in the overall demand-supply dynamics.
