- Government expands rail-based buffer onion distribution across the Northeast ahead of the festive season
- Fresh kharif arrivals and easing wholesale prices provide additional supply support
The government is expanding the distribution of buffer-stock onions across the Northeast, with the first Kanda Express consignment carrying around 440 tonnes expected to reach Agartala, Tripura, on 18 October 2026. According to a 16 October press release from the Press Information Bureau (PIB), under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, the initiative aims to improve regional availability across Tripura ahead of the festive season. Meanwhile, fresh kharif arrivals have contributed to a moderation in wholesale prices.
Rail and road network expands regional coverage
According to the PIB release dated 16 October 2026, the first Kanda Express consignment is expected to strengthen onion distribution across seven of Tripura’s eight districts: Dhalai, South Tripura, Khowai, Unakoti, West Tripura, Gomati and Sepahijala.
The government has dispatched more than 2,800 tonnes of buffer-stock onions to the Northeast through rail and road networks. The PIB reported that two Kanda Express rakes carried 840 tonnes and 452 tonnes, respectively, while 44 truck consignments transported a further 1,513.46 tonnes. These supplies have supported distribution across Assam, Tripura and Nagaland.
Wholesale prices ease, but regional retail rates remain firm
According to Press Bureau India’s report published on 16 October 2026, the all-India average mandi price of onions declined from around INR 3,600 per quintal in September to INR 3,300 per quintal in October, supported by fresh kharif arrivals.
However, retail prices in Assam averaged INR 54.30 per kg, compared with the all-India average of INR 53.07 per kg, according to the same report. The difference indicates that easing wholesale prices have not fully translated into lower retail prices in all regions. For northeastern markets, the impact will depend partly on the timely movement of supplies and distribution costs.
Outlook
The arrival of 440 tonnes of buffer-stock onions could improve availability in Tripura ahead of the festive season. Fresh kharif arrivals are also supporting the moderation in wholesale prices. However, the extent of any retail price relief will depend on last-mile distribution, local demand and the pace of fresh arrivals
