It has been noted that India based biggest private power generation company, Tata Power's proposed conversion of its gas-based power generation unit (No 6) in Trombay into coal-based one has received a green nod from a third party examiner, the National Environmental Engineering and Research Institute (NEERI).
As a part of Environment Clearance Process, Tata Power applied to Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) for Unit 6 modernization Project and MoEF granted ToR for the preparation of EIA report. Subsequently, Tata Power prepared Environment Assessment Report through M/s. Tata Consulting Engineers Ltd. (TCE) which is accredited Consulting Organization by National Accreditation Board for Education and Training (NABET – a wing of Quality Council of India) as a consultant for conducting EIA studies.
The same was submitted for the conduct of public hearing which was organized on 15th January 2013. During the public hearing, one of the concerns raised was that M/s. TCE being a Tata Group company, review of the report prepared by TCE is required to be carried out by an independent agency as third party of repute, the report said.
