India: Iron Ore Exports at 17 MnT in FY17 (Apr-Jan’17)

Indian iron ore exports have shown a tremendous growth in FY17. During Apr’16-Jan’17, the country has exported around 17 MnT low grade ore.

In Jan’17, iron ore exports were recorded at 2.75 MnT against 2.93 MnT in Dec’16. In addition, exports have witnessed an increase of 108% on Y-o-Y basis as only 1.32 MnT iron ore was exported during the same month last year.

Iron ore exports from Goa and Odisha saw a rapid growth after Indian government waived off export duty on low grade iron ore (below Fe 58%) in Feb’16.

In Jan’17, exports from Goa were registered at 1.76 MnT against 2.07 MnT in Dec’16. During Apr-Jan’17, exports from Goa were registered at 10.4 MnT against 3.85 MnT in the same time frame last year.

On similar line exports from Odisha was registered at 0.42 MnT (from Paradip & Dhamra Port) against 0.51 MnT in Dec’16.During Apr-Jan’17, exports from Odisha were registered at 3.36 MnT (from Paradip & Dhamra Port) which was only 79,000 MT in the same time frame last fiscal.

Alongside, the higher global iron ore prices which touched USD 81/MT, also attracted iron ore exporters to look for better opportunities in exports. Indian iron ore exports in Jan'17China-largest export destination for Indian iron ore: China turned out to be the largest export destination for iron ore. China contributes 80% of total Indian iron ore exports. In FY17, India has exported 13.55 MnT iron ore to China during Apr-Jan’17.

India also exports iron ore to Japan and South Korea. Out of the total iron ore exports in FY17 (till Jan’17), exports to Japan remained at 16%, South Korea 3% and rest from others.

It is expected that Indian iron ore exports is likely to be around 20 MnT in FY17, which was 6 MnT in FY16, 4.8 MnT in FY15 and 14.5 MnT in FY14.
