India’s rail-based rice movement remains an important channel for transporting rice from surplus and procurement regions to major consuming centres. The latest data shows movement across several states, involving both government agencies and private industry participants. The distribution pattern highlights continued inter-state movement to meet requirements across different regions ahead of the new procurement and marketing cycle.
Karnataka records highest rice rake inflow
India’s rice rake movement stood at 0.4 million tonnes (mnt), with Karnataka recording the highest inflow at 72,610 tonnes (t), followed by Tamil Nadu at 53,589 t and Assam at 51,593 t. Karnataka’s rakes originated from Odisha, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Punjab, while Tamil Nadu received supplies mainly from Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Punjab. FCI remained a key participant, alongside private traders in Assam.
Major rice movement across states
Uttar Pradesh recorded 37,491 t of rice rake movement, followed by Gujarat at 36,658 t and Kerala at 33,734 t. Bihar received 29,889 t, while Andhra Pradesh recorded 25,315 t, with movements originating from multiple states. Jharkhand and Maharashtra recorded 23,209 t and 15,689 t, respectively. Jammu and Kashmir received 8,228 t, followed by Rajasthan at 7,736 t and Tripura at 5,649 t. Lower volumes were recorded in West Bengal at 3,425 t, Mizoram at 2,579 t and Nagaland at 123 t.
FCI was involved in several movements, alongside private participants such as Maa Vindhyavasini, M S Trading, Amba Agro, Tirupati Paddy and others.
W-o-w comparison
India’s rice rake movement declined to 0.4 mnt from 0.5 mnt, down by around 18.6%. Karnataka’s movement fell from 1,02,106 t to 72,610 t, while Uttar Pradesh declined from 66,132 t to 37,491 t. Bihar and Rajasthan also recorded notable declines. In contrast, Kerala saw movement rise from 17,909 t to 33,734 t, while Tamil Nadu increased slightly from 52,361 t to 53,589 t. Tripura also recorded a marginal increase. Madhya Pradesh, which recorded 5,158 t previously, had no movement listed in the latest assessment.
Outlook
Rice rake movement is expected to remain focused on major consuming and distribution centres, with Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Odisha continuing to serve as important loading origins. FCI remains the dominant participant across several routes, alongside private traders and rice industry participants.
