Odisha: Govt Directs Mineral Vehicles to Install Vehicle Tracking Units By 28 Feb

Department of Steel and Mines, Government of Odisha has recently issued a notification regarding installation of Vehicle Tracking Units in all the vehicles registered under i3MS to carry minerals/ores.

As per the notification issued, the owners of vehicle carrying minerals will have to abide by the directions issued and they will have to ensure installation of Vehicle Tracking Units in all the vehicles latest by 28 Feb’17 falling which no permission for mineral transportation will be issued in favour of the vehicles not equipped with the Vehicle Tracking Units from 01 Mar’17 onwards.

Prior to this, Odisha govt had issued a notification on 19 Oct’16 regarding introduction of a system for Global Positioning System (GPS) based tracking of mineral carrying vehicles on compulsory basis with an objective to check illegal transportation and storage of mineral.

Vehicle Tracking Unit (VTU) is an industrial and automotive grade product integrated with GPS and General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). It has features like – location on demand, SMS facility and storage of past positional log.
