The growth of Renewable energy power generation saw remarkable growth by 28.13% during Apr-Nov’16. Conventional Energy recorded a rise by 5.03% to 777,768 Million Units (MU) during Apr-Nov’16 compared with 740,547 MU during Apr-Nov’15. Overall Power Production increased by 6.38% during the same period.
Conventional energy generation includes power generated from Thermal (Coal, Diesel, Gas), Nuclear, Hydro and energy imported from Bhutan. Whereas Renewable energy includes power from Wind, Solar, Biogas, Biomass, small hydro and other sources, which are available at free of cost and do not harm nature. While conventional sources require expensive fuel, higher operating cost plus they affect nature in an adverse manner.

Quantities in MU
Renewable Vs Conventional:
Growth in Conventional power Generation was 8.9% Y-o-Y to 93,569 MU in Nov’16 compared with 85,906 MU in Nov’15. Whereas Renewable sources increased by 26.73% Y-o-Y. However both Conventional & Renewable energy generation decline M-o-M owing to low energy demand in the winter season.
Given massive capacity plans in the renewable sector including solar, Wind and Hydel power Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has estimated no new coal-fired plants to be established during 2017-22.
Renewable Energy being environmentally friendly will help cut country’s energy crisis in an economical way.
