India: Foundry scrap prices rise across major markets; Kolkata bucks trend

  • Tight material availability supports prices in western, southern India
  • Lower regional billet prices pressure Kolkata market

Foundry scrap prices in India increased w-o-w across major consuming regions as of 29 September 2026, with Kolhapur, Coimbatore and Chennai witnessing price gains across both foundry plate and CR-busheling scrap. The upward movement was primarily driven by tight material availability, with suppliers raising offers amid shortages and limited availability of suitable scrap.

Market participants reported that buyers continued to procure material to meet their immediate requirements, while suppliers remained firm on offers due to constrained availability. In contrast, Kolkata witnessed a decline in foundry plate prices, as lower regional billet prices during the previous week made buyers reluctant to purchase scrap at higher levels.

Regional price commentary

Kolhapur (West India)

Foundry scrap prices increased significantly w-o-w, with foundry plate scrap (4-8 mm) rising by INR 1,000/t to INR 42,500/t, while CR-busheling scrap increased by INR 2,000/t to INR 47,000/t.

The CR-busheling segment witnessed stronger upward movement, with sellers seeking higher realisations amid limited availability. Buyers requiring immediate material were seen accepting higher offers, supporting the overall price increase.

Coimbatore (South India)

Prices increased across both assessed grades. Foundry plate scrap (8-50 mm) increased by INR 1,300/t to INR 43,600/t, while CR-busheling scrap rose by INR 500/t to INR 46,300/t.

The market witnessed firm seller offers during the week, with availability of certain grades remaining restricted. The stronger increase in plate prices reflects the higher replacement cost faced by buyers for securing fresh material.

Chennai (South India)

Foundry plate scrap (8-50 mm) increased by INR 1,300/t to INR 41,800/t, while CR-busheling scrap rose by INR 500/t to INR 44,500/t.

Buying interest remained focused on immediate requirements, while sellers were less willing to negotiate at earlier levels. This resulted in a gradual upward adjustment across both assessed grades.

Kolkata (East India)

Foundry plate scrap (4-8 mm) declined by INR 500/t w-o-w to INR 41,000/t.

Unlike other major markets, the Kolkata market faced downward pressure following a decline in regional billet prices during the previous week. Buyers were reluctant to purchase scrap at higher levels and pushed for lower prices in line with reduced billet realisations. This resulted in a correction in foundry plate scrap prices.

Outlook

Foundry scrap prices are expected to remain firm in the near term, particularly in markets where availability remains constrained. However, further price increases could face resistance if buyers continue to limit procurement to immediate requirements.

In Kolkata, the price direction will remain closely linked to regional billet prices and buyer purchasing levels.
