India: ECL’s non-coking coal auction sees strong G4 premiums

  • Auction sees strong demand for G3, G4, G5
  • G11, G12, G13 clear near notified levels

Eastern Coalfields Ltd. (ECL) allocated 277,750 t in its e-auction held on 16 September 2026 against 722,200 t offered. Bidding remained highly selective, with strong competition for G3, G4 and G5 coal from several mines. G4 recorded premiums above 200% at multiple sources, while G11, G12 and G13 largely cleared close to notified prices.

G4 sees strongest competition

G4 attracted the strongest bidding across several mines. Nimcha UG recorded the highest premium at 264.4%, with a winning price of INR 12,960/t against INR 3,557/t notified. Bansra UG followed at 240%, while Chora 7&9 pit UG and Chora 10 pit UG recorded premiums of 224.7% and 221.1%, respectively.

Other G4 sources also attracted strong premiums, including New Kenda at 215.7%, Patmohona at 221.2%, Parbelia at 219.8% and Narsamuda at 220.8%. Amritnagar recorded the lowest G4 premium at 101%.

G3, G5 also attract premiums

G3 bidding remained strong at the selected mines. Jambad UG recorded a winning price of INR 12,351/t, carrying a 232.1% premium over the notified INR 3,719/t. Central Kajora UG attracted a 200.7% premium, while Porascole (E) UG recorded 218.8%.

Narainkuri Highwall G5 also saw firm bidding, with a winning price of INR 7,342/t against INR 3,275/t notified, resulting in a 124.2% premium.

Lower grades clear near notified prices

In contrast, bidding for G11, G12 and G13 remained limited. Hura C G12 cleared at the notified INR 1,801/t, while Hura C G11 at INR 2,155/t and Rajmahal G11 at INR 2,154/t were almost at notified prices.

Rajmahal G13 also cleared at INR 1,716/t, equal to the notified price. W04 at Chapapur attracted a moderate 88.6% premium, while W06 at Itapara saw only a 5.2% premium.

Comparison with 10 Sep auction

G11 prices on 16 September remained above the 10 September Siarmal G11 result, while G13 at Rajmahal cleared below the 10 September Kulda G13 result. G12 also showed a wider difference, with Hura C clearing near the notified price compared with stronger bidding at several G12 sources on 10 September.

Buyer participation remains selective

Compact Weighing was the largest buyer in the 16 September auction with 64,550 t, including 50,000 t G12 and 10,550 t G4. Shakambhari Ispat and Power secured 22,100 t, while Mohit Minerals purchased 20,000 t of G13. Sendoz Impex secured 12,000 t across G13, G11, and G12, while Apollo Energies purchased 10,000 t.

Overall, the auction showed a clear split in bidding behaviour. Selected G3-G5 sources attracted substantial premiums due to strong buyer preference for specific mine-grade material, while larger G11-G13 parcels largely cleared around notified prices. The wide variation suggested that bidding remained highly source-specific rather than broad-based across ECL’s offering.

Additional auction on 14 Sep

ECL also conducted an auction on 14 September, offering 20,000 t of G7 coal from Gopinathpur MD. The auction allocated 16,000 t at a winning price of INR 522/t. Compact Weighing was the largest buyer with 4,000 t, followed by Ratan Coal Suppliers with 3,500 t and Calstar Sponge with 3,000 t.
