Indian ferro vanadium prices dip amidst weak demand and buying activity

  • Limited trading activity weighs on prices
  • Market sentiment remains Subdued this week

Indian ferro vanadium (FeV 50%) prices declined by INR 8,200/t ($86/t) week-on-week to INR 1,246,800/t ($13,000/t) on 23 September. The downward trend is attributed to persistently weak demand from domestic special steel manufacturers and a lack of significant trade volumes, as market participants adopted a cautious approach amid limited buying interest in the current trading session.

Weak downstream demand limits price recovery

Demand for ferro vanadium remains subdued, primarily due to cautious procurement by downstream steel producers. Although industrial activity is showing gradual signs of improvement, this recovery has yet to translate into sustained purchasing from steel mills. Limited spot market transactions indicate that buyers are largely covering only immediate requirements rather than building inventories. This cautious procurement environment has reduced market liquidity and created persistent downward pressure on prices, delaying a meaningful recovery despite improving broader industrial conditions.

Ample global inventory weighs on market sentiment

Elevated global inventory levels continue to weigh on ferro vanadium market sentiment. Available material appears sufficient to meet near-term consumption requirements, reducing the urgency among buyers to secure additional volumes. As a result, market participants remain cautious about committing to larger purchases, particularly amid uncertainty over the timing and strength of demand recovery. This wait-and-watch approach has limited transaction activity and restricted suppliers’ pricing power, preventing any significant upward movement in ferro vanadium prices despite relatively stable supply conditions.

Outlook

Ferro vanadium prices are likely to remain under pressure in the near term, with subdued steel demand and ample inventories limiting buying interest and restricting meaningful price recovery.
