India’s Power generation from conventional sources saw a rise by 2% M-o-M in Dec’16 in the wake of increasing electricity demand. Particularly thermal electricity generation rose by 4% to 85.89 Billion Units (BU) in Dec’16 compared with 82.89 BU in Nov’16.
Power generation from Conventional sources includes Thermal, Hydro, Nuclear generation and electricity imported from Bhutan. It may be noted that only power generation from Thermal sources have risen in Dec’16 while that from all other sources have declined. Thermal power generation also increased by 8% Y-o-Y as compared to 79.89 BU in Dec’15.

Power Plant Installed Capacity:
India’s Total power plant installed capacity stands at 310005.28 MW as on Dec’16. In Dec’16, three new power plant units were commissioned in the thermal sector with the total capacity addition of 1960 MW during the month.
- Kudgi TPP, U-I 800 MW was commissioned on 25/12/2016.
- Koradi TPP, U-10 660MW was commissioned on 28/12/2016.
