India's leading International mining company Midwest Africa and mining giant Rio Tinto Coal has got the 25-year concession contracts for two coal projects in Tete province with the government of Mozambique.
Midwest Africa has got a concession grant for total reserves of around 480MnT of coal which includes 363MnT of Coking coal. Coal Production is scheduled to begin in 2019 with annual output expected at 1MnT of coking coal and 6MnT of thermal coal. It is estimated that the USD1.4 billion will be invested in the project.
However Rio Tinto is awarded Zambeze project concession which is having reserves of about 2.3 billion tonnes and probable resources – some 6.6 billion tonnes. The company plans to invest USD3.3 billion. Coal mining is to start in 2023-2025 with annual output at 7MnT of coking coal and 5MnT of thermal coal.
