- Installed PV capacity reaches 1.286 billion kilowatts
- Solar power generation rises 15.5% in Jan-May’26
According to China’s National Energy Administration, as of the end of July 2026, the country’s installed photovoltaic (PV) power generation capacity reached 1.286 billion kilowatts, including 704 million kilowatts of centralised PV and 582 million kilowatts of distributed PV.
For the first time, PV power generation capacity surpassed coal-fired power, becoming the largest power source category in China in terms of installed capacity. Coal-fired power capacity is assessed at 1.285 billion kilowatts.
In July this year, newly installed photovoltaic power generation capacity reached 13.73 million kilowatts, a y-o-y increase of 43%. From January to July this year, the cumulative newly installed PV power generation capacity reached 85.65 million kilowatts, a y-o-y decrease of 62% (mainly due to the rush to install PV from January to May 2025, resulting in a higher base in the same period last year).
PV power generation reached 802.4 billion kilowatt-hours, a y-o-y increase of 15.5%, exceeding the growth rate of total electricity consumption by 10.8 percentage points. PV power generation accounted for 13% of total electricity consumption, an increase of 1.7 percentage points compared to the previous year.
In recent years, PV power generation capacity and power generation have maintained a rapid growth trend, playing an increasingly prominent role in ensuring power supply and promoting energy transformation.
