Poland’s coal output hits near 1-year low in Jul’26

• Hard coal output falls 5% y-o-y on weaker power generation
• Lignite production declines sharply by 12% y-o-y

Poland’s output of hard coal and lignite stood at 6.29 million tonnes in July, marking the lowest level since August last year, according to the latest data from the Central Statistical Office of Poland (CSOP).

Compared with June, the July level dropped by 2% and was lower by a larger 8% from July last year, Mysteel Global calculated based on the data.

Last month, Poland’s output of hard coal (including coking and thermal coal types) stood at 3.43 million tonnes, basically flat on month but down 4.4% on year. Lignite output was 2.85 million tonnes, down 4.1% on month and 12.3% on year, according to the CSOP’s breakdown data.

Coal is a major energy source in Poland, accounting for over half of the country’s power generation. As cooler temperatures eased power consumption last month, lower fuel demand from the power sector may have also slowed coal production, Mysteel Global notes.

According to the CSOP data, Poland’s power generation in July reached 13,422 Gigawatt-hours (GWh), down 5.7% on month and 2.3% on year.

Poland experienced a heat spell in June when temperatures averaged 18.8°C, making it the second warmest June in the country’s record, reported Obserwator, a meteorological magazine under the Instytut Meteorologii i Gospodarki Wodnej – Poland’s national public weather service and research institute.

However, the hot weather temporarily eased in July, as the monthly average temperature retreated from June to 18.5°C, also down by 0.4°C from the average recorded over 1991-2020 for the month, according to Obserwator.

Over January-July, Poland’s cumulative production of hard coal and lignite totalled 46.96 million tonnes, up 1.1% from the same period of last year.

Apart from coal, Poland’s output of coke for all uses totalled 4.1 million tonnes in the first seven months of this year, down 5.1% from the year-ago level, according to the CSOP data.
