Baltic Dry Index rebounds as Capesize and Supramax strengthen; Panamax remains under pressure

  • Capesize recovery and Supramax resilience support BDI
  • Persistent Panamax weakness continues to weigh on the market

The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) snapped a two-day losing streak on 20 August, rising 15 points (0.5%) d-o-d to 2,791 from 2,776 on 19 August. The recovery was supported by firmer Capesize and Supramax freight rates, while continued weakness in Panamax limited the overall upside.

The latest movement reflects a divergent trend across vessel segments, with Capesize recovering from its recent weakness and Supramax maintaining its resilience, while Panamax remained under pressure.

Segment-wise performance

  • Baltic Capesize Index (BCI): Increased by 53 points (1.2%) d-o-d to 4,429 from 4,376. The recovery signals improved momentum in the larger vessel segment and provided the strongest support to the BDI during the session.
  • Baltic Panamax Index (BPI): Declined by 19 points (1%) to 2,088 from 2,107, reaching its lowest level since 31 July. Continued weakness in Panamax remained the key drag on the broader dry bulk market.
  • Baltic Supramax Index (BSI): Edged up by 3 points (0.2%) to 1,637 from 1,634, reaching its highest level since 28 July. The continued gain highlights comparatively firmer sentiment in the smaller vessel segment.

Outlook

The BDI is likely to remain mixed in the near term. Further recovery in Capesize and sustained Supramax strength could support, while persistent Panamax weakness may cap broader gains. Cargo enquiries, vessel availability and chartering activity will remain key factors shaping freight sentiment.
