- Strong supply pressures obsolete scrap prices
- Firm sheet demand supports prime scrap
The RMDAS ferrous scrap index recorded a mixed trend on 21 August 2026 compared with 21 July, with obsolete grades under pressure while prime scrap remained relatively firm. Shredded scrap prices declined by $10/t to $418/t, while HMS prices fell by $8/t to $366/t, reflecting strong scrap supply, increased summer collection activity and seasonal pressure from mini-mill maintenance outages.
Meanwhile, the prompt industrial composite scrap index increased by $2/t to $471/t, supported by firm domestic sheet steel demand. Potential disruptions to Ukrainian pig iron shipments also provided additional support to prime scrap values.
