India: Hindustan Zinc raises renewable power share to 22%

  • Renewable power consumption rises from 18% in FY26
  • 530 MW round-the-clock arrangement supports FY28 target

Hindustan Zinc has increased the share of renewable power in its overall electricity consumption to 22%, from approximately 18% in FY26, as the company scales clean energy use across its mining and smelting operations.

The company is targeting renewable sources for approximately 70% of its overall power requirements by FY28. To support the transition, it has expanded its round-the-clock renewable power arrangement with Serentica Renewables to 530 MW from 450 MW.

Renewable generation expands

During FY26, the company generated 892 million units of green power, up 41% from 632 million units in FY25. The increase, combined with renewable power procurement, has lifted the contribution of renewables to its overall power mix.

Its renewable portfolio includes solar, wind and energy storage solutions aimed at providing round-the-clock clean power. The company is also implementing floating solar installations on water ponds and improving waste heat recovery boiler steam turbine generation.

Energy transition supports operations

Hindustan Zinc is also upgrading power connectivity from the state transmission network to the central transmission utility as part of efforts to improve the reliability and efficiency of its power supply.

CEO Amarendu Prakash said the company’s target to raise renewable power consumption to 70% by FY28 is intended to support a more resilient and competitive operating model while reducing its environmental footprint.

The initiatives form part of the company’s Science Based Targets initiative-validated decarbonisation pathway towards achieving net zero emissions by 2050 or sooner.

Business impact

The expansion of renewable power could progressively reduce the company’s reliance on conventional electricity across its mining and smelting operations. The higher renewable share also increases the importance of round-the-clock power solutions and transmission infrastructure in supporting energy-intensive metals production.

The 530 MW renewable power arrangement, up 18% from the earlier 450 MW capacity, provides additional contracted capacity as the company works towards its FY28 renewable power target.
