India: Gravita to add 59,200 tpa copper recycling capacity at Mundra

• Copper recycling capacity to rise by 59,200 tpa
• Investment of INR 64 crore through internal accruals
• Project targeted for completion by March 2029

Gravita India Ltd has announced plans to expand its copper recycling business by establishing an additional 59,200 tonnes per annum (tpa) recycling capacity at its existing facility in Mundra, Gujarat. The company will invest around INR 64 crore in the project, which will be funded through internal accruals.

The proposed expansion is aimed at strengthening the company’s position in India’s growing copper recycling sector and enhancing its ability to meet increasing demand for recycled copper from both domestic and overseas markets. The facility will process copper-bearing recyclable materials and is expected to improve feedstock availability, operational efficiency and supply chain integration.

The project will be implemented in phases and is scheduled for completion by 31 March 2029. According to the company, the investment forms part of its broader strategy to build an integrated copper recycling value chain and expand its presence across non-ferrous recycling segments.

The additional capacity is expected to support the company’s planned copper operations in Gujarat by ensuring a more consistent supply of recycled copper feedstock. The move comes amid rising global emphasis on resource efficiency, circular economy practices and lower-carbon metal production.

Copper recycling typically requires significantly less energy than primary copper production, making recycled material increasingly attractive to manufacturers seeking to reduce emissions and improve sustainability credentials. Growing demand from the electrical, electronics, renewable energy and infrastructure sectors is also expected to support long-term consumption of recycled copper.

With the latest investment, Gravita continues to diversify its recycling portfolio while strengthening its long-term growth strategy in the copper segment. The expansion is expected to enhance the company’s processing capabilities and reinforce its position within India’s evolving non-ferrous recycling industry.
