India: Iron ore concentrate prices remain firm as market awaits OMC auction outcome

  • Buyers adopt need-based procurement amid high moisture
  • Pellet demand supports concentrate price stability

India’s iron ore concentrate prices remained stable on 19 August 2026 as buyers continued need-based procurement while sellers held offers firm ahead of Odisha Mining Corporation’s (OMC) auction outcome. BigMint’s bi-weekly assessment for Fe 62% concentrate stood unchanged at INR 4,600/t ($48/t) ex-works, while Fe 63% concentrate offers were heard at around INR 4,900/t ($52/t) ex-works. Firm pellet prices, tighter iron ore availability in Odisha and OMC’s higher base prices have strengthened sentiment across the concentrate market.

Trading activity remained limited during the assessment window, with no confirmed trades recorded. Sellers largely refrained from lowering offers as they awaited the auction outcome for a clearer indication of buyers’ acceptance levels and replacement costs. Market participants indicated that fresh offers are likely to reflect the auction’s price discovery, particularly after OMC raised base prices for several iron ore grades.

Demand, however, remains relatively healthy, with new buyers entering the market and existing consumers continuing to procure material against operational requirements. This has allowed sellers to maintain their price expectations despite limited spot transactions.

Heavy rainfall has disrupted mining and processing operations in several regions, affecting production and dispatch schedules. Increased water ingress at mines has reduced operating efficiency, while elevated moisture content in material has further complicated handling and transportation.

A Jabalpur-based seller said, “Plant operations remain affected, while buyers have already procured bulk quantities most buyers are waiting for the OMC auction outcome before making fresh purchases. Earlier, material was sold at lower levels, but sellers are now likely to quote higher prices. Moisture levels have also increased significantly during the rains, reaching 12-15% against the usual 10% allowance at the siding.”

The seller added that railway restrictions during the rainy season had also contributed to delays in dispatches, although the situation had improved over the past few days.

A buyer said, “We are purchasing only on a need basis because moisture content is very high during the season, making inventory stocking unattractive.”

Rationale

  • Zero (0) trade was recorded in this publishing window, which was taken into consideration. Therefore, this category received a 0% weightage.
  • Eight (8) offers and indicative prices were heard, and all are taken into consideration as T2 trades, receiving 100% weightage.

Factors shaping market dynamics

  • Pellet prices provide support

Concentrate prices are also receiving support from the pellet market. BigMint’s bi-weekly domestic pellet Fe 63% index for Raipur increased by INR 250/t w-o-w to INR 10,450/t ($109/t) DAP on 18 August from INR 10,200/t on 14 August.

The increase was driven by tighter availability of iron ore lumps and fines, which supported sponge iron and billet prices and improved pellet procurement sentiment. Pellet sellers were quoting above INR 10,300/t ($107/t) ex-works, while stronger demand from sponge iron and billet producers and limited alternative feedstock availability enabled producers to maintain firm offers.

  • OMC supply reduction tightens raw material availability

OMC will auction 1.831 mnt of iron ore on 19 August, comprising 1.21 mnt of fines and 0.62 mnt of lumps. The offered quantity is around 0.7 mnt lower m-o-m amid monsoon-related disruptions to mining operations.

Lump base prices have increased by INR 100-250/t across grades, while fines prices for Fe below 62% have risen by INR 100/t. High-grade fines prices remain unchanged. The reduction follows a 0.62 mnt cut in July after the Odisha DMG restricted dispatches of Fe 55-60% iron ore.

Outlook

Iron ore concentrate prices are likely to face upward pressure following the OMC auction as sellers reassess offers based on the auction’s price discovery and prevailing raw material costs. Firm pellet prices, reduced iron ore availability and monsoon-related production and logistics constraints are expected to keep seller price expectations elevated, while buyers are likely to remain selective and procure mainly against immediate requirements.
