Indian Steel Ministry Vouches for Coking Coal Import Duty Reduction in FY18 Budget

The Steel Ministry has sought reduction in the extant import duty of 2.5% on Coking Coal imports into India in the next budget. According to the inputs received, the Steel Ministry has recommended the Finance Ministry to bring down the import duty in respect to the coal, among other items, in the FY18 budget.

Moreover, the Steel Ministry also held discussions with the Coal Ministry in regard to benefits derived from investing in Coal Washeries in the country. Coking Coal mined in India is characterized by higher ash content that renders it unfit for the steel making. Quality of the domestic Coking Coal could be improved by removing the constituent ash in Coal Washeries, post mining.
