Global iron ore freight rates turned weaker, with rising vessel availability and softer chartering activity weighing on Capesize rates across key routes. The BDI fell 7% w-o-w, led by a 12% decline in the Capesize index, while Supramax rates remained comparatively resilient on steady Indian iron ore enquiries. Softer Chinese iron ore futures and cautious mill restocking added to the pressure, keeping the near-term outlook subdued.
India-bound coal freight markets remained mixed, with Australian Panamax rates facing pressure while Supramax rates gained. The divergence reflected differences in cargo and vessel availability across segments, keeping overall market sentiment uneven.
India’s rice export freight market continued to show mixed trends, with bulk rates to West Africa remaining firm on fresh fixtures and congestion at discharge ports, while container rates softened as space availability improved marginally. Congestion and berthing delays at Mundra and JNPT continued to add volatility, while firm rice export prices and improving cargo enquiries provided some support to the bulk segment.
