Baltic Dry Index declines to 1-week low as Capesize, Panamax weakens

  • Panamax snaps nine-session winning streak; Supramax recovers
  • Capesize index drops by 6% as freights ease after recent gains

The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) fell for a third consecutive session, declining 107 points (3.5%) d-o-d to 2,939 on 12 August from 3,046 on 11 August, marking a one-week low. The broader correction was driven primarily by a sharp decline in Capesize freight and a marginal pullback in Panamax rates, while Supramax edged higher. Capesize led the decline, while Panamax weakened after a nine-session winning streak, signalling some moderation in its recent firm trend.

Segment-wise performance

  • Baltic Capesize Index (BCI): Declined 5.7% to 4,712 on 12 August from 5,001 on 11 August. The sharp correction signals a clear easing in Capesize freight momentum after recent gains, with the segment emerging as the main drag on the overall BDI.
  • Baltic Panamax Index (BPI): Fell 0.4% to 2,302 from 2,312, snapping a nine-session winning streak. Despite the decline, Panamax fundamentals remain relatively better supported, although the latest movement points to some moderation in the segment’s recent strength.
  • Baltic Supramax Index (BSI): Recovered marginally by 0.2% to 1,603 from 1,600. The modest recovery provided some support to the overall index, although subdued minor bulk demand continued to limit upside.

Outlook

The BDI is likely to remain under pressure over the coming week, with the recent three-session decline suggesting softer momentum, particularly in Capesize. Panamax may also see some consolidation after its nine-session winning streak, while Supramax could remain comparatively stable if minor-bulk enquiries improve.

The market direction will depend on the pace of fresh cargo enquiries and vessel availability. Sustained iron ore and coal cargo flows could limit further downside, while improving tonnage availability or weaker chartering activity could extend the correction.
