- Firm coal and grain demand supports Panamax market
- Supramax remains subdued amid weak minor bulk demand
The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) slipped by 6 points (0.2%) d-o-d to 3,057 on 6 August, easing after a five-session rally. The decline was led by a modest correction in the Capesize segment following strong recent gains.
However, the downside remained limited as the Panamax market extended its upward momentum, reaching its highest level since 15 June, supported by firm coal and grain demand. Meanwhile, Supramax freight rates continued to trade sideways, reflecting subdued minor bulk cargo activity and sufficient vessel availability.
Segment-wise performance
- Baltic Capesize Index (BCI): Declined 0.82% (42 points) d-o-d to 5,052 on 6 August from 5,094 on 5 August. The index snapped its five-day winning streak as profit-taking emerged after a strong rally, although freight levels remained well supported by healthy iron ore cargo programmes from Australia and Brazil and relatively tight vessel availability.
- Baltic Panamax Index (BPI): Increased 1.74% (39 points) d-o-d to 2,275 on 6 August from 2,236 on 5 August, marking its highest level since 15 June. The gains were driven by sustained coal shipments from the Pacific and steady grain exports from the Atlantic, which continued to support chartering activity across both basins.
- Baltic Supramax Index (BSI): Edged down 0.25% (4 points) d-o-d to 1,608 on 6 August from 1,612 on 5 August. The segment remained under pressure as weak demand for minor bulk commodities, including steel products and fertilizers, along with ample vessel supply, continued to limit freight rate improvements.
Outlook
The dry bulk market is expected to remain mixed in the near term. Capesize freight rates may consolidate after the recent rally but should stay supported by firm iron ore export programmes and balanced vessel supply. Panamax is likely to retain a positive bias amid healthy coal and grain trade flows, while Supramax rates are expected to remain rangebound unless minor bulk cargo demand strengthens or fleet availability tightens.
