Turkey Coal Imports Up 13% in Nov’16

Turkey monthly coal imports have increased by 13% in Nov’16. Besides, Yearly imports have risen by 21% as compared to Nov’15.

Turkey, one of the major coal importing nations, has imported 4.48 MnT coal in Nov’16, the imports have increased on monthly basis. Also, yearly imports have risen by 21% which was at 3.70 MnT in Nov’15. As per Turkey customs data.

Out of the total imports, the country receives more than 70% bituminous coal from the different origins and rest quantity comprises Coking coal, Pet coke and other grades.

In the month of Nov’16, out of the total imports, the country has received 3.57 MnT Bituminous coal, 0.56 MnT Coking coal and about 0.35 MnT other grades.

As Turkey’s domestic fuel resources consist exclusively of lignite and less amount of hard coal, it is heavily dependent on coal imports. Turkey’s net energy imports account for approximately 76% of the total primary energy needs.

Turkey has imported 38.01 MnT coal during Jan-Nov’16, up by more than 8% compared with 35 MnT during the same period of previous year.

Major exporting countries in Nov’16
Colombia, the largest supplier to Turkey, shipped about 1.72 MnT coal in Nov’16 with an increase of 21% M-o-M compared with Oct’16. Also, recorded significant growth in exports by 72% Y-o-Y.

Moreover, Colombia supplies more than 30% share of the total yearly coal imports to Turkey. Again recorded as the top supplier and shipped about 14.42 MnT coal in Jan-Nov’16.

Russia, the second-largest coal exporter to the Turkey, shipped 1.52 MnT coal in Nov’16, coal exports have increased by 8% M-o-M. Yearly coal supply has also increased by 25%.

Colombia and Russia together account for more than 70% of the coal supplied to Turkey in the month of Nov’16.

USA, the third major coal exporter to Turkey, shipped around 0.42 MnT coal during the month, up by 49% M-o-M. However, recorded a downfall of 27% Y-o-Y.
