- Global steelmaking capacity rises to 4.2 mnt
- Downstream expansion underway in India
India’s Jindal Stainless Ltd. (JSL) has commissioned its 1.2 million tonnes per annum (mntpa) stainless steel melt shop (SMS) in Indonesia ahead of schedule, strengthening its upstream capabilities while accelerating downstream capacity expansion in India to support long-term growth in value-added stainless steel products.
Indonesia plant boosts global steelmaking capacity
Jindal Stainless commissioned its Indonesian stainless steel plant in March 2026, earlier than originally planned. The facility, developed through a joint venture, has an annual steelmaking capacity of 1.2 mnt, increasing the company’s total global stainless steelmaking capacity from 3 mntpa to 4.2 mntpa.
Following the expansion, JSL now operates 3 mntpa of stainless steelmaking capacity in India and 1.2 mntpa in Indonesia, strengthening its access to raw materials and improving supply chain efficiency.
India downstream expansion gathers pace
Alongside the Indonesian project, Jindal Stainless is investing in downstream processing facilities across India.
The company is constructing a 1.1 mntpa Hot Rolled Annealing and Pickling (HAPL) line at its Jajpur, Odisha plant, which is scheduled for commissioning during Q4 FY2027 (Jan-Mar 2027).
In addition, a 170,000-tpa cold rolling, annealing and pickling line at the same facility is expected to commence operations during Q2 FY2027 (Jul-Sep 2026).
Cold-rolled capacity to reach 2.67 mnt
JSL is also investing an additional INR 9 billion to expand cold-rolled stainless steel production at its Hisar and Kharagpur facilities.
The expansion is expected to be completed during Q2 FY2028 (Jul-Sep 2027), increasing the company’s cold-rolled capacity from 2.05 mntpa in FY2026 to 2.67 mntpa in FY2028. Cold-rolled products will account for nearly 64% of JSL’s total steelmaking capacity, reflecting the company’s focus on higher-value stainless steel products.
Strategic outlook
The early commissioning of JSL’s Indonesian melt shop strengthens the company’s integrated stainless steel production network while improving access to Indonesia’s nickel resource base. Coupled with ongoing downstream investments in India, the expansion is expected to enhance JSL’s product mix, increase value-added production, and support long-term growth in domestic and export markets.
