NTPC Ltd, country’s largest power producer, has successfully commissioned its first 800 MW power plant in Kudgi, Karnataka.
Kudgi Super Thermal Power Plant is the first coal-fired plant of NTPC Ltd in the state of Karnataka. Coal for the power plant is derived from NTPC’s Pakhri Barwadih coal block in Jharkhand state. The water source is from the reservoir of Almatti Dam constructed on Krishna River.
The total capacity of this power plant is 4000 MW and is being developed in two phases: 3X800 MW (Phase-I) and 2×800 MW (Phase- II).
The Steam generator is supplied by Doosan Power System Pvt Ltd and Toshiba Power System has provided steam turbine and generator to NTPC for the power plant.
This is the second 800 MW power unit to be commissioned in the state of Karnataka. Earlier, Yeramarus Thermal Power Station, owned by Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd was commissioned in March, 2016.
Kudgi Thermal Plant, based on super critical technology is economical than sub-critical plants, as they operate at much higher temperature and pressure also coal consumption in such plants is less, resulting in reduced emission.
With the commissioning of this plant, the number of coal-based power plants owned by NTPC has reached to 19, with an installed capacity of 35,885 MW and that of NTPC group (including JVs and subsidiaries) has become 48,028 MW.
