India’s largest bauxite block auction enters next phase as industry giants compete

  • Final auction round expected within 20 days
  • Raw material security drives strong industry interest

India’s race to secure critical mineral resources has intensified as Odisha’s Karlapat bauxite block, one of the country’s largest untapped bauxite deposits, moves into the next stage of the auction process. The block, located in Kalahandi district, holds over 200 million tonnes (mnt) of bauxite spread across more than 3,100 hectares, making it the largest bauxite reserve currently on offer in the state.

The Odisha government had put the Karlapat block up for auction on 29 May, along with 10 other virgin mineral blocks.

According to industry sources, 11 companies have submitted bids for the Karlapat block. Of these, six companies will qualify for the final round of the auction, which is expected to take place over the next 15-20 days.

Market participants indicate that Adani Enterprises, Reliance Industries, Hindalco Industries, Vedanta Aluminium, Naveen Jindal-backed Powermec, and Coal India are among the companies that have purchased tender documents and shown interest in the asset.

Raw material security drives interest

The strong response underscores the increasing importance of securing captive bauxite resources as India’s aluminium industry prepares for significant capacity expansion.

Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, plans to expand its production capacity from 2.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to 6 mtpa in the coming years. Hindalco Industries is also expanding its Aditya Aluminium facility in Odisha by 360,000 tonnes per annum, targeting growing demand from renewable energy, electric vehicles, infrastructure and aerospace.

Meanwhile, the Adani Group is developing a proposed $11.5 billion aluminium project with Abu Dhabi-based International Holding Company (IHC), making long-term access to bauxite a priority.

Final auction round in focus

The Karlapat block is expected to witness intense competition in the final bidding round due to its scale and strategic significance. Market participants will closely monitor the shortlisted bidders, bid premiums and the eventual winner, as the auction outcome is expected to influence India’s aluminium raw material landscape and support future capacity expansion plans.
